You will be met at the airport and transferred to your hotel. After a welcome meeting with your Tour Director, we take in a city tour of the horse capital of the world, Lexington. This evening, we’ll enjoy a welcome dinner at a nearby restaurant.
DAY 2
Our first stop this morning will be the famed Kentucky Horse Park. At the park entrance, we are welcomed by the majestic Man O’War memorial. You’ll be able to explore the park at your own pace. Why not visit the International Museum of the Horse, take in the Parade of Champions or tour the scenic park grounds in a horse drawn trolley. Then it’s off to Keeneland’s track kitchen, since 1936 the place where owners, trainers and jockeys rub elbows before heading to the track. After lunch, we’ll have the opportunity to explore one of the world’s most picturesque racetracks. After our Keeneland visit, we head for Three Chimneys Farm, home of past Kentucky Derby winners now at stud including Smarty Jones and Big Brown. This thoroughbred farm has everything you’d expect to see on one of the world’s finest horse farms. Time to admire these beautifully manicured grounds and impressive barns before we return to our hotel.
DAY 3
After breakfast, we drive the short trip to Louisville, home of the Kentucky Derby. Our morning visit to the Louisville Slugger Museum, home of the world’s biggest baseball bat, is a popular one. This factory and museum is iconic in Louisville and the most visited landmark. It’s then off and running to the Kentucky Derby Museum. After lunch at the derby cafe, we’ll have the chance to tour the exhibits before being escorted on a walking tour of Churchill Downs. The Finish Line Gift Shop has some wonderful souvenirs and mementos to take away with you. We then drive back into downtown Louisville for a city tour.
DAY 4
This morning we’re off to ladies day at Churchill Downs and the Kentucky Oaks. First run in 1875, the Oaks is a race that is considered by some to be the second most popular horse race in the United States due to its attendance. Expect over 100,000 people at Churchill Downs as women don their most feminine outfits for a day of champagne, fashion and fun.
DAY 5
It’s back to Churchill Downs today for the showcase event, the Kentucky Derby. Known as the “Run for the Roses” because the winner receives a lush blanket of 554 red roses, the Derby typically draws crowds in excess of 150,000 fans. Watch all the action unfold from your reserved grandstand seats, mingle with the celebrities or try a traditional mint julep before watching the “most exciting two minutes in sports”.
